NZ Craft Beer and Wine

2024

The Otago Polytechnic School of Design is located in Ōtepoti (Dunedin), Aotearoa (New Zealand).

The School of Design introduced a set of craft beers and wines to gift to its industry partners, and for celebratory occasions — such as graduate student exhibitions. Thus, the packaging needed to help the beer and wine serve as a token of appreciation for its partners, as well as display the creative nature of the school. The beverages are produced in collaboration with Otago Brew School and Bannockburn Road Vineyard, which the packaging highlights to convey the school’s connectivity to local industries and communities. Additionally, the packaging serves to communicate the cultural narrative of the school and Ōtepoti, which is known for its Māori, Scottish, and Chinese heritages.

Full project proposal available here.

  • Pilsner, Pale Ale, and Kolsch labels, six-pack carrier

The three variety of beers are intended to be served at celebratory school events such as exhibitions and fashion shows, in which case they would be given individually to attendants. The six-pack beer ring is to be used if the beers are gifted as a set to industry partners, with a personalized "thank you" tag attached.

  • Pinot Noir and Chardonnay labels, wine carrier

The wines are meant to be gifted to industry partners as a product of higher value, more so than served at school events. For this reason, the packaging design is elevated to an increased sense of sophistication in its simplified composition, addition of gold lettering, use of black elements and less saturated color, and a fully-encasing box. The wines can be given either individually or as a "gift set" (two bottles in the wine box carrier with a personalized "thank you" tag attached).

  • Screen printed t-shirt and tote bag

The t-shirts can be sold at school events where the beers or wines are available, or worn by servers who handle the beers and wines at the events. The tote bags can also be sold at school events where the beers or wines are available, or gifted together with the beers or wines to industry partners.

  • The brochure is intended to be paired with the beers and wines, as it explains the narratives embedded in their label designs. This could be in the form of being on display at school events where the beers or wines are available, or handed out together to attendants with the drinks. The brochures would also be included with any gifts for industry partners.

  • The stop motion reel promotes the craft beers, and is intended for any of the School of Design department Instagram accounts. As the beers will not be sold in stores or separately from events, the reel simultaneously functions as a promotion for the event at which the beers will be served, which is this year’s Debrief School of Design Graduate Showcase.
